Keeping Theatre Royal Wakefield's Fun Run Connected with Two-Way Radio Hire

Over 30 costumed fun runners took on a hilly course in Thornes Park to raise money for Theatre Royal Wakefield. We kept the event team connected with 11 hired two-way radios, delivered next day.

Theatre Royal Wakefield Fun Run 2026, supported by Blink Web two-way radio hire

On Sunday 11 October, more than 30 fun runners took to Thornes Park in Wakefield in full costume to raise money for Theatre Royal Wakefield. We were delighted to support the day with two-way radio hire, helping the event team stay in touch from the start line to the finish arch.

A fun run with a serious purpose

The Theatre's Fun Run offered a choice of a hilly 2.5km or 5km course, and the runners took it on in style. Every penny raised goes towards Theatre Royal Wakefield's work with the community, and the team had raised over £3,200 at the time of writing.

They're aiming for £3,500. A huge well done to everyone who gave up their Sunday morning to run, marshal and cheer.

How we helped

We supplied the event team with 11 two-way radios on hire. The radios arrived pre-programmed and ready to use, so the team could simply switch on and talk, with a charger for every handset.

Although we're based in Hampshire, we deliver radios right across the UK, and Wakefield was no exception: the radios went out on next day delivery, so they were with the team in plenty of time for race day, and came back to us once the event was done.

Why radios make a difference at a fun run

A fun run looks simple from the sidelines, but behind the scenes there's a lot to coordinate. Marshals are spread around the course, someone needs to know when the last runner has passed each point, and first aiders need to be reached quickly if anyone takes a tumble on the hills.

Two-way radios suit this perfectly:

  • One press reaches everyone. No group chats, missed calls or waiting for someone to pick up.
  • They work where phones struggle. Parks with trees, dips and hills can have patchy mobile signal, and nobody wants to be unlocking a phone with cold hands.
  • Batteries last all day. Professional handsets comfortably cover a full event, from setting up to packing away.
  • They're simple to use. Pre-programmed radios mean volunteers can be ready in seconds, even if they've never used one before.

Planning radios for your own event?

If you're organising a fun run, fete or charity event, a few tips will help everything run smoothly:

  1. Count your key points. Allow one radio per marshal point, plus the start, the finish, first aid and the event lead. Add one or two spares.
  2. Think about noise. Earpieces make a big difference near music, crowds or a busy finish line.
  3. Keep it simple. One shared channel is usually best for smaller events, with a second channel for first aid or traffic on larger ones.
  4. Test before the gates open. A quick radio check from each point confirms everyone can hear each other.
  5. Charge the night before. Our radios come with chargers, so plug them in when they arrive and they'll be ready on the day.
