Case Study: DMR Two-Way Radio System for a Multi-Campus School in Hampshire

A large school in Hampshire operating across three separate campuses needed a more dependable way for staff to communicate day to day. Each site had its own reception and coordination between them was often slow or inconsistent especially when relying on mobile phones or internal systems.

During busy periods or unexpected incidents, this lack of instant communication became a real operational challenge. The school also recognised the need for a more resilient solution that would continue to work even if local networks or power were disrupted.

To address this, the school worked with Blink Web to implement a digital two way radio system using over 60 Hytera PD785 handsets. The system was designed to link all three campuses together so that reception teams could communicate seamlessly regardless of location. This meant calls could be handled collaboratively, messages passed instantly and incidents managed more effectively across sites.

A key part of the setup was the use of separate channels for different departments including receptions, estates, IT, administration and teaching staff. This allowed each team to communicate without unnecessary interruptions while still having the ability to reach other groups when needed. Because the system uses DMR technology, multiple conversations can take place at the same time which proved especially useful during peak periods when several teams needed to coordinate simultaneously.

The radios were also configured with emergency functionality, giving staff a reliable way to raise alerts quickly. In the event of a local outage or network failure the system continues to operate providing a level of resilience that the school did not previously have. This has been particularly valuable for safeguarding and incident response, where clear and immediate communication is critical.

Since the system was introduced, staff have found communication to be quicker, clearer and far more reliable. Reception teams across all campuses are now effectively connected and operational departments can respond to issues without delay. The school has reduced its reliance on mobile phones and now has a dedicated communication platform that supports both everyday activity and emergency situations.
